Cleaner Air Mass Expected Thursday

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa Deparment of Natural Resources asked the National Weather Service to issue an air stagnation advisory Tuesday.
As a result of the poor air quality across Iowa, the National Weather Service issued the advisory. The NWS reported that air quality across large areas of Iowa was unhealthy for sensitive groups on Monday due to microscopic-sized particulate matter, which are microscopic-sized soots and aerosols.
Similar conditions could persist through Wednesday.
As a precaution, persons with heart or lung disease including asthmatics, and healthy children and active adults should consider avoiding or postponing vigorous or prolonged outdoor activities until conditions improve, according to the Iowa DNR. A cleaner air mass is expected Thursday.
The air quality index measured 119 in Des Moines, 112 in Cedar Rapids and 104 at Viking Lake State Park in Montgomery County in Southwest Iowa. Surrounding counties experienced similar levels. Sunday levels were also unhealthy in Linn and Polk Counties.
All other areas of the state are experiencing elevated but moderate pollution levels. Widespread areas of the upper Midwest are experiencing similar conditions. The Air Quality Index reports pollution levels using a color coded and numbers for pollutants. The higher the AQI, the poorer the air quality.
An AQI of 1 to 50 is green or good, 51 to 100 is yellow or moderate, 101 to 150 is orange or unhealthy for sensitive groups, 151 to 200 is red, unhealthy for everyone.
Small particles can penetrate into the deepest parts of the lungs, and can increase the likelihood of symptoms in sensitive individuals, including children, the elderly and those with heart and lung disease. If air quality remains poor, the NWS said another statement will be issued Wednesday.
